What Is BPPV? A Common Cause of Sudden Spinning Vertigo
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, usually shortened to BPPV, is one of the most common causes of sudden, brief spinning vertigo. If the room has spun for a few seconds when you rolled over in bed or looked up, this may be relevant to you.
What Happens in BPPV
Tiny calcium crystals inside the inner ear's balance organs can become displaced and move into a part of the ear that senses rotation. This can send confusing signals to the brain about movement, which is experienced as a brief spinning sensation.
Typical Triggers
Movements such as rolling over in bed, looking up, bending down, or tilting the head back can trigger a short episode, which usually lasts a matter of seconds to a couple of minutes before settling.
How BPPV Is Assessed
A vestibular and balance assessment can help identify whether specific head positions are triggering the vertigo, and which side may be involved, which in turn guides what support or exercises may be suitable.
