Understanding Your Audiogram: What Your Hearing Test Results Actually Mean
After a hearing test, many patients leave with a printed audiogram but aren't quite sure how to read it or what the lines and symbols actually mean for their hearing.
What an Audiogram Shows
An audiogram is a graph that records how softly you can hear different pitches (frequencies) in each ear, usually shown with one symbol for the right ear and another for the left.
Reading the Basic Layout
Frequency (pitch, from low to high sounds) is plotted left to right, and loudness (the volume needed for you to hear it) is plotted top to bottom, so marks lower down on the chart generally indicate a greater degree of hearing loss at that pitch.
Why the Pattern Across Frequencies Matters
Hearing loss can be worse at certain pitches than others - difficulty with higher-pitched sounds is a common early pattern - which is one reason the same-looking audiogram can affect speech clarity differently from person to person.
Turning the Report Into a Plan
Dr. Murli Singh reviews your specific audiogram with you, explains what the pattern means for your everyday hearing, and discusses whether a hearing aid or another option is appropriate for your situation.

Understanding Your Audiogram: What Your Hearing Test Results Actually Mean FAQs
What do the symbols on an audiogram mean?
Typically one symbol marks results for the right ear and another for the left, plotted against pitch and loudness so you can see how each ear responds across frequencies.
Does a lower mark on the audiogram always mean worse hearing?
Generally, marks lower on the chart indicate softer sounds were harder to hear at that pitch, but your audiologist is best placed to explain what your specific pattern means.
Can I get my audiogram explained without taking a new test?
If you already have a report, Dr. Murli Singh can review it with you during a consultation to explain what it shows.
